15 Binge-Worthy Shows on Netflix

Saturday, October 27, 2018

So... I watch a lot of TV. Anyone who knows me knows that I'm the TV Binge Queen. So here's a list of 15 Shows You Should Be Bingeing On [Singaporean Netflix 2018 Edition] (in no particular order).

1. Altered Carbon / 1 Season / Action, Sci-Fi

Altered Carbon is set in a future where consciousness is digitised and stored in cortical stacks,  allowing humans to survive physical death by having their memories and consciousness "re-sleeved" into new bodies. Takeshi Kovacs is downloaded from an off-world prison and into a combat-ready body, and must solve a mind-bending murder to win his freedom. In Season 1, Kovacs was played by Joel Kinnaman, who's sexy as hell whose body was that of a disgraced police officer. Super great show to bingewatch, full of action, badass murders and drama. Altered Carbon has been renewed for Season 2 but since the entire premise of this series is about having new bodies....... Joel Kinnaman won't be playing Kovacs again. Marvel star Anthony Mackie will take over the leading role of Takeshi Kovacs!

2. The Good Place / 3 Seasons / Comedy, Drama

Eleanor Shellstrop finds herself in the afterlife, she's both relieved and surprised that she's made it into the Good Place. The Good Place has existed since the beginning of time and is a utopian paradise for those that were truly noble and good in life. But it doesn't take long for Eleanor to realise she's there by mistake. If you don't already watch this... what are you waiting for?? The Good Place is honestly amazing. The cast is super diverse. Yes, it's centered around a white female lead, but the main characters are: a crazy smart black man who's also a romantic interest? An asian guy who's not smart AT ALL (lol) and a super tall, super successful Pakistani/English lady. And (human) demons everywhere. All the characters are incredibly loveable and the humour is easily understood even by stupid people like me. I just absolutely love this show and I can assure you that you'll enjoy it too. Watch it. Now.

3. Lost In Space / 1 Season / Adventure, Sci-Fi

Set 30 years in the future, colonisation in space is now a reality, and the Robinson family is among those tested and selected to make a new life for themselves in a better world. On the way to a better world, the Robinsons' ship is abruptly thrown off course and they crash landed on a lost planet. Now light-years from their original destination, they must work together to survive. Stranded with the Robinsons are master manipulator Dr. Smith and inadvertently charming Don West (my favourite), two outsiders who are thrown together by circumstance and a mutual knack for deception. The Netflix reimagining of '60s classic Lost In Space is one of my absolute favourite shows ever since I came across it. I bingewatched it in a day. Totally addictive. Diverse cast (kind of), enjoyable storyline, crazy SFX. Can't wait for season 2.

4. Marvel's Jessica Jones / 2 Seasons / Action, Drama

Of all the Marvel TV shows, Jessica Jones is the best one by far. Krysten Ritter plays the lead, Jessica Jones, who's basically a badass private investigator with superhuman strength. David Tennant plays Kilgrave, the main antagonist in Season 1 and he's actually frickin scary and his performance is crazy convincing. Jessica Jones is a very bingeable show with a memorable villain and a great lead.

5. Kim's Convenience / 2 Seasons / Comedy, Drama

I. LOVE. KIM'S CONVENIENCE. A friend tweeted about it or told me about it and I decided to give it a go. I'm obsessed. Totally binged it. It's about a Korean-Canadian family who run a convenience store in Toronto. It's funny as heck, absolutely heartwarming and if you're Asian - you'll relate. That's 100% confirmed. Kim's Convenience is just an exceptional series that I love so much. It's well-written, diverse, and it's just... I have no words to describe how much I love this show. It's just so refreshing and it makes me laugh until my non-existent abs hurt. 10/10. Season 3, where you at??

6. Timeless / 2 Seasons / Action, Adventure

Okay I googled to check if Season 3 was out yet and I'm suddenly so upset... There won't be a Season 3. But anyway, it's still worth watching. One of my favourite shows — An unlikely trio travel through time in order to battle unknown criminals and protect history as we know it. I look forward to the period in history where the characters will go in each episode. It's compelling and interesting and teaches history along the way. Like, I learn so much lol. The attention to detail with the costumes and the dialogue and historical information are a joy to watch. How would life be different if you changed what happened in the past? I guess you'll just have to watch and find out.

7. Santa Clarita Diet / 2 Seasons / Comedy, Drama

I started watching this because I was bored, and I kept watching episode after episode. It gets more amazing as the series goes on. The interplay between husband, wife, and daughter is brilliant and the timing and delivery is spot on. It's really gross and gory sometimes and she's pretty much a cannibal (are zombies considered cannibals) but y'all know I love gore. I love Drew Barrymore as the lead, and Timothy Olyphant (the husband) makes this incredible show even more amazing?? Their daughter and the neighbour's son are also hilarious. Highly recommended.

8. Crazy Ex Girlfriend / 3 Seasons / Comedy, Musical

After a chance meeting with a former romantic interest, Rebecca impulsively decides to give up her life in New York and relocate to West Covina, California, a Los Angeles suburb she hopes will be the perfect home base as she embarks on a quest for love, adventure and true happiness. I think my ex told me to watch this so long ago and I finally did and ZERO regrets lol. Rebecca Bunch is actually cray. I got hooked pretty fast. I love the cast, they're all super talented and the storyline is addictive. Season 4 just started and I can hardly wait for it to end so I can bingewatch it.... Or should I watch it week by week and savour it? Oh the cast is also super diverse, which I always love in a TV series. The two main characters are kinda plus-sized, the main love interest is Filipino, there's a significant character who's actually canon bisexual and he even sings a song about it. Ugh I'm obsessed with this and my sister hates that I talk like Rebecca bYEEEE

9. Daredevil / 3 Seasons / Action, Crime

Blinded as a young boy, Matt Murdock fights injustice by day as an attorney, and a vigilante by night. Daredevil is dark, intense and hypnotising with its brutal fight sequences. It has an excellent cast, led by Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock, who even received an award from American Foundation for the Blind in 2015 for his portrayal in the show. I loved the first two seasons and the third season just came out on Netflix. Time to binge this? Hell yes.

10. Brooklyn 99 / 5 Seasons / Comedy, Crime

Brooklyn Nine-Nine follows the detective squad in the NYPD’s 99th police precinct as they solve cases, form relationships, and engage in shenanigans. B99’s detective squad is hella ethnically diverse, with two Latinas and two Black detectives that each bring different dynamics to the show. Each character brings their own comical traits and leaves the audience in stitches every episode. One thing I really love about B99 is that it speaks up for social justice, and approaches issues in a refreshing, satisfying way. I honestly had three paragraphs of me just raving about B99 but let's just keep it short, alright? Conclusion: Watch it. 10/10 would recommend.
PS: Jake Peralta, marry me

11. Atypical / 2 Seasons / Comedy, Drama

Call me superficial, but an attractive cast is usually the first thing to tempt me into watching a new series. So it took me awhile before I decided to give Atypical a chance, and it's because I thought it would genuinely be interesting. It’s a charming coming-of-age show about Sam Gardner, an 18-year-old from Connecticut with high-functioning autism. The series covers his awkward encounters with women, his inappropriate crush on his therapist, and his challenges in school and in relationships. His dad is honestly so precious, and his mom is a total bitch. The person I love most is probably his younger sister, Casey, who takes care of Sam while figuring out her own life. She also exudes very strong Gay Energy™ and she's my favourite person ever. This is totally a bingeable show, it's heartwarming, it's sweet and overall pretty amazing.

12. Chewing Gum / 2 Seasons / Comedy

I watched this years ago, and when it came on Netflix I rewatched it again because it's hilarious. It is such a feel-good series to watch and every episode makes me laugh out loud. Michaela Coel is brilliant and I can't praise this show enough. My only complaint is that there's so few episodes!!! Ugh. Watch it. Binge it in a day. You won't regret it, I promise.

13. Dexter

I bingewatched 8 seasons in exactly two weeks. Dexter is undeniably amazing and extremely addictive. Dexter Morgan is an excellent blood spatter analyst at the Miami Metro Police Department by day, and a serial killer by night... and I absolutely love him. Dexter definitely isn't a new TV series and I regret taking so long to start watching it. It's a total masterpiece and you'd be intoxicated by Michael C Hall's performance as the sociopathic Dexter and the complexity of said character. I was enthralled and totally absorbed in every single episode................. but the ending is disappointing. Like really, really disappointing. But Dexter still made it on this list because it quickly crawled its way into my life and into my top ten favourite TV series.

14. The Haunting of Hill House / 1 Season / Horror, Drama

The Haunting of Hill House is the most recent series I've watched. If you follow me on Twitter, you'd see that I live-tweeted a little while watching it. The series is rated 9.0/10 on IMDb and I think that's the highest rating a Netflix Original has ever gotten. Flashing between past and present, this series follows a family dealing with haunting memories of their old home and the terrifying events that drove them from it. I super duper recommend it to everyone who loves horror, but even if you just like a proper good drama, this is amazing, and it's scary but not too scary. I'm a huge horror fan and also a total scaredy cat and I survived, so you definitely will too. The characters are well-developed, the storyline is enthralling and suspenseful and I'm honestly not talented enough to have the proper words to describe what a total masterpiece this series is. 100% bingeable.

15. The Rain / 1 Season / Sci-Fi, Thriller

This is a Danish series that I absolutely loved. Six years after a brutal virus carried by the rain wiped out almost all of humanity, two siblings emerge from the safety of their underground bunker to find all remnants of civilisation gone. They soon find other survivors and they carry on searching for any signs of life. I loved this show because it's very character driven. It accurately shows how spending six formative years in a bunker can affect someone’s mental development, it shows how people do stupid things when they're scared and desperate, and it shows the struggle of holding onto your humanity when the rest of the world seems to have lost it.
